Global Impact Volunteers Get Right to Work

Devotion: Jesus Is Our Hope

Before the time of Christ, life was very difficult and people searched for something in which to place their hope. They had the Law, but that only came with accusation. No one could fulfill the Law, and the result was death.

This crisis covered all aspects of life: politics, economics, health, even spiritual life. This is similar to the situation today, with one exception: Jesus has brought us the hope of forgiveness and eternal life. Through His death on the cross, He took the condemnation of our sins upon Himself. Through His resurrection from the dead, He gives us complete forgiveness.

The world we live in is ruled by a physical law. Decay is a natural ending to any living thing. But scientists are trying to prolong human life by developing cryogen systems and clone technology, spending huge amounts of money on rich people who are afraid of death and are hoping to avoid it.

There is, however, something very simple - and remarkable -- that gives us hope. Whether you have money or not, faith in Jesus Christ alone provides hope. The apostle John wrote, "I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life" (1 John 5:13).

But, how can one believe if they have not heard? This is where God uses us -- to tell others about what He has done through Jesus Christ!

THE PRAYER: Thank You for the love and life You have given us through the death and resurrection of Your Son, Jesus. Give us the opportunities and words to share Your Good News with others. Amen.

Global Impact Volunteers Heads to Nicaragua

Global Impact Volunteer Team led by Pastor Ray Scheer of Covington, Louisiana will be traveling today to Leon, Nicaragua to assist our office in building a “rancho.” The eight members of the team are from the Southern District, and include Scott Scheer, Joseph Arthur, Gerard Haulard, Dixie Lee, Elizabeth Alford, Carl and Katherine Baeuerlin.

The roof and metal supports for the “rancho” are already in place. This group will be working on the construction of the walls. The “rancho” will be completed by another Global Impact Volunteer Team next year. Please keep this group in your prayers for safe travel, a wonderful week of work and meeting with local people, and bless this project as it is being built to serve LHM for outreach events and establish a church for worship.

LHM—Uganda Delivers Messages to Youth on the Go

Mobile phone usage is the largest growing avenue of communication for people in Uganda between the age of 13 and 35 years. Out of more than six million mobile users in the country, young people use cell phones for more than just sending and receiving text messages (also known as SMS). They share pictures, listen to music, and exchange emails. A few even surf the Internet or hear radio broadcasts directly on their phones.

Recognizing this importance of mobile phones, Lutheran Hour Ministries in Uganda has begun using this new avenue of communication to reach out to young people and expand ministry outreach into different communities. For example, at the end of each radio program, listeners are encouraged to respond via SMS with questions or comments.

“Text messaging is a great way of enhancing response from recipients as it’s less intrusive than a phone call,” said Charles Bameka, the director of LHM—Uganda. “Plus by using a web-based text messaging interface, we have a detailed record of our SMS ministry.”

Bameka reports that the SMS ministry yields about 40 responses for every message sent to a thousand individuals.

“Many of the respondents appreciate receiving a reassuring Christian message in the midst of life’s daily challenges,” he observed.

Devotion: Fragrance On The Hand Of The Giver

The owner of a large estate once gave his gardener some red roses to take home to his wife. The flowers, however, never made it to their intended recipient. On the bus that afternoon, the gardener sat next to a widow who spoke of her loneliness. Knowing his wife would understand, he gave the roses to the lonely widow and brightened up her day.

But the widow didn't get home with them either. At the grocery store, she came upon a tearful young girl. The girl's mother was very ill. "Here," the widow said, handing the flowers to the girl. "Give them to your mother; tell her I'll be praying for her tonight."

Gratefully, the girl accepted them and took them to her mother. The roses cheered the bedridden woman, but even she didn't keep them. "They're too beautiful not to share," she told her pastor when he came to visit the next day. "I'd like the church to have them." So the pastor took them and placed them in the sanctuary where his congregation could see and enjoy them. After the service, the minister gave single roses to some of the church members as they left. The beauty of the flowers was extended once more before they wilted.

There's a beautiful poem entitled, "Flowers Leave Their Fragrance on the Hand of the Giver," and the words are true. Every good deed, every selfless kindness, every thoughtful action which comes from a heart full of faith -- a heart touched by the abundance the Lord has freely given -- has a way of blessing the giver and multiplying the gift. Like the ripple effect of a stone tossed into water, the circles that emanate can reach many unseen shores.

So it is with the greatest love of all. Jesus' redemptive work on the cross comes to us through God's Word. By the sanctifying power of the Holy Spirit, we are made clean and acceptable to God through faith in the salvation Christ has won for us. God's fragrance, the perfect sacrifice of His Son, is offered to everyone.

LHM—Brazil Director Robbed… Again

Several days ago we reported that Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM)—Brazil director, Paulo Warth and his wife Lucia, had been kidnapped and robbed in September. Unfortunately, this past Sunday the couple was robbed once again outside their home.

Paulo and Lucia were returning from a weekend trip to Buenos Aires, Argentina. The flight was delayed and the plane arrived in Sao Paulo at midnight. They took a cab from the airport, and when the taxi stopped on the street in front of their home, two men on a motorcycle approached them with guns. The criminals took one of their suitcases containing clothing and gifts they had bought for their children. The men also took their hand luggage, along with documents, credit cards, and money before getting away on motorcycles.

Despite reported improvements, Brazil continues to have some of the highest crime rates in the world. Much of the crime and violence in that nation has been linked to drugs and alcoholism. According to the US State Department robbery and “quicknapping” outside of banks and ATM machines are common. In a “quicknapping,” (which is what happened to Paulo and his wife last month) criminals abduct victims for a short time in order to receive a quick payoff from the family, business or the victim’s ATM card.

"We are really living under fear all the time. It is even affecting my health, which seems to be getting worst,” Paulo said. “But in the midst of all this we are thankful to God for preserving our lives. The rings are gone, but the fingers still remain. God is merciful. Praise the Lord!"

Devotion: Letting The Hands Of Jesus Shape Our Lives

An auction of used items was being held. Among them was an old, scratched guitar. When the auctioneer lifted it up and offered it to the audience, no one bid anything for it. The room remained silent.

Just then, a famous guitar player from the area came to the front. He was the owner of the guitar. He stepped forward, took it in his hands, blew off the dust and tuned it. After doing this, he performed a beautiful music piece on that dented guitar, leaving the audience elated, and letting them see the guitar was a great instrument if played in such a masterful way. When he was done, the audience gave him a standing ovation.

So the auctioneer tried again. He presented the old, worn guitar to the audience. This time one of the participants offered a lot of money for it, and it sold for a very good price.

Many times in the course of our lives, we think we know everything about a given situation. Of course, with our limited and imperfect knowledge that's not the case. As a consequence, our arrogance often leads us to bad decision-making and faulty conclusions. In humility, we must recognize we need God and, by the power of His Spirit, yield our lives to His direction.

Today's Scripture reminds us that God -- and God alone -- is in total control. Through His infinite love and the forgiveness offered through Jesus Christ, He molds and shapes the lives of His children. He gives us the strength necessary to serve Him obediently, even as we are renewed daily to accomplish positive changes in our lives and improve our personal relationships.

Through His grace and forgiveness, Jesus gives us the only peace we need, which turns us into helpful people for ourselves, our loved ones, and those around us.

THE PRAYER: Heavenly Father, let the hands of Your beloved Son, Jesus, touch our lives and fill us with His beautiful blessings and love. Amen.

LHM Employee Kidnapped and Robbed

Every so often we are reminded of the dangers that our staff face in other parts of the world. Last month, for example, Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM)—Brazil director, Paulo Warth, reported that he and his wife, Lucia, had been kidnapped and robbed.

Paulo and Lucia were driving to a wedding on a Friday evening, and stopped to pick up a friend. While they were parked on a busy street outside the apartment building, two armed men ordered Paulo into the back seat where he was joined by one of the criminals. The other man drove, with Lucia in the front.

The men demanded cash, jewelry, and credit cards (which they handed off to accomplices in another car). They then drove around the city of Sao Paolo for over two hours. Meanwhile the accomplices used the credit cards. According to Paulo, the robbers even stopped twice to buy drugs.

The ordeal finally ended when, much to the Warth’s relief, the criminal abandoned the car in a rough part of town leaving Paulo and Lucia to drive off unharmed. In all the robbers charged over $2,000 to Paulo’s credit card, but given the circumstances he was glad they still had their lives.

Coming on the heels of this incident was the recent news that Victor Verruck, the director of LHM—Paraguay, was robbed as he boarded a bus to return home from a ministry convention in Asuncion, Paraguay. The thief grabbed Victor’s cell phone and escaped before he could give chase.

Sadly, this is not uncommon in Paraguay.

“While I was waiting to give a police report two people came in saying that one of them had also had their phone stolen,” said Victor. “It is very sad but here you will hardly find someone that has not been robbed of their cell phone or wallet.”

Incidents such as these highlight the problem of crime in Latin America, and the need for programs like LHM’s Project JOEL which reaches out to youth with the Gospel message. JOEL volunteers visit schools, hospitals and organize events where young children and teens learn about and discuss issues such as crime, alcohol and drug abuse, teen pregnancy, and self-esteem.

Please pray for LHM staff and volunteers around the world as they carry out ministry activities in some very dangerous places.

Devotion: God's Word At Work

Before each of my English classes I write a short Bible verse at the top of the white board. Because it's in the direct line of sight of the students, they can't miss it. Even those students who aren't interested in hearing about Christianity can't help but read it. I'm sure some students read it more than once during the class.

In the middle of one of my classes I was teaching about past tense. After a few examples and some practice, I asked if anyone had any questions. One student raised his hand. "I'm wondering about the meaning of what you wrote at the top of the white board," he said.

"Could you please explain it to me?" Of course he was referring to the Bible verse. On that particular day the Bible verse was "Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners" (1 Timothy 1:15b).

To explain the verse I spoke about how all people are sinners and how we are unable to save ourselves from the punishment we deserve for our sins. I told him Jesus was the Son of God, and that God loves us so much He sent Jesus to die on the cross to suffer the judgment we all deserve. In the midst of teaching past tense, I was given an opportunity to share the Gospel with the whole class.

The Word of God is indeed living and powerful. The Holy Spirit used it to touch the mind of one student. It stimulated his curiosity and prompted him to ask about its meaning. As a result, every student in the class heard the Gospel.

In the book of Isaiah God says, "So is My Word that goes out from My mouth: It will not return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it." God's Word is powerful. God sends out His Word to do His work and it succeeds. When my students read God's Word on the white board, God's power works within them.

God's Word is not only beneficial in teaching and strengthening us as we study it, but it is also an effective tool for us to use in reaching out to people who don't know Jesus as their Savior. Sometimes we want to witness to someone, but we don't know what to say. Our words are often weak and stumbling. But God's word is sure and strong.

THE PRAYER: Dear God, thank You for giving us Your Word. Teach us how to use Your powerful Word as we reach out to the unbelievers around us. Amen.

LHM in Argentina Welcomes New Manager

We would like to welcome a new ministry center manager the Lutheran Hour Ministries family.

Gloria Tolisano is the new Manager of Cristo Para Todas Las Naciones, the LHM office in Argentina, replacing Rev. Alberto Groh. She was born in Argentina, and came to the church when she attended Concordia High School, in Buenos Aires. She worked for 12 years as the administrative secretary for the Colegio Luterano Concordia, in the city of Córdoba, and in addition to this she worked on producing radio spots for the Lutheran Hour in Argentina.

From 2002 to 2007, Gloria lived in Montevideo, Uruguay, where she worked at her husband’s Cyber/Internet Café, as well as at the new LHM office, as administrative secretary. She has a professional degree from the Universidad Nacional del Litoral, in Argentina.

Gloria is active in the Lutheran Church and a leader in her congregation. According to her pastor, “Gloria has a mission vision which she has shown in all what is related with the challenge that the congregation has, regarding to the mission and its context.”

Equipping the Saints in Thailand

LHM —Thailand staff recently made the five hour long trip to conduct an Equipping the Saints (ETS) workshop at Samarn Samakee Church in Muang District - approximately 250 miles outside of Bangkok. In total, 72 people from eight different churches participated in the one-day workshop.

ETS evangelism workshops are designed to engage lay volunteers from church congregations and strengthen their understanding, and interest in witnessing while providing them the practical tools needed for reaching the unchurched.

Those who attended the workshop at Samarn Samakee Church expressed their appreciation, saying that they were happy to learn about LHM and the media tools, such as booklets and CDs that are available for them to reach out to family members and neighbors in their own communities.

Inauguration of the JOEL-Bugambilia’s Sports Field

The sports field was inaugurated on Saturday with one soccer game and three foot races. Three teams (two with young children and one of youth) were formed on Saturday for an active day of sports that brought together a total of 20 young people. They also got to enjoy a hot dog lunch.

The purpose of the JOEL sports field is to connect with youth people living in the area called “Ojo de Agua” (Eye of Water) so that relational bridges can be built for the presentation of the Gospel message.

Each Saturday Project JOEL leaders will schedule recreational activities (soccer games, races, martial arts) as well as educational activities (sharing lessons based in biblical values, classes for parents on parenting, classes of nutrition, etc).

It is important to connect not only with the young people but with their whole family as we meet the whole child needs: physical, emotional, spiritual.

Friday Devotion: "Put Your Life In The Care Of The Lord"

While a lady was visiting her neighbor, she allowed her six-year-old son to go out and play in the yard. After a while, she went out to see what the child was doing. Nearby, was a painter on a high scaffold. To her dismay, the lady observed that her son had gone up to the last rung of the ladder.

"Arthur, get down!" the nervous woman yelled, alarming the child who began to look down full of fear. The painter immediately realized the danger the child was in and very calmly spoke to the mother saying, "Your boy is all right. I will take care of him." Then he told the child, "Look up and climb to where I am."

With a smile, and watching the man's eyes, the boy arrived safely to where the man was waiting. He took the boy in his arms and carefully started to climb down, finally handing him over to his mother.

How often do we look down when we face dangers and conflicts, rather than focusing on Jesus and trusting our lives to His care and guidance? When we are threatened by dangers and conflicts, we cling to our own strengths instead of looking to Him. We often forget to let Him guide us with His love through the difficulties of this life.

When it is your turn to face difficult tests, and you think you are sinking in misfortune, stop looking down and look up to Jesus with confidence. Remember the psalmist's words: "Commit your way to the LORD; trust in Him and He will do this."

Always remember, dear friend, that in the midst of adversity, the promises of our beloved Father are greater than the conflicts we experience in life.

THE PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for Your love to help us confront our tests with great peace and the assurance You have provided protection. Help us savor the great blessings and immense love You have for us. Amen.

Thousands in Myanmar Turn Up to Enjoy Music and Fellowship

LHM—Myanmar, together with the Christian Music Fellowship, organized a “Gospel through Music” program in several different towns and villages throughout the month of August. In total, 40 people including well-known Christian musicians, some audio engineers, and LHM staff and volunteers traveled by bus and performed for audiences – as many as 5,000 people at one particular church in Moegoke. Since some of the musicians are popular on a national level, approximately half of the people who came to enjoy the performances were non-believers.

The coordinator of LHM—Myanmar took time at each venue to share the Gospel message, while several of the Christian performers also gave their life’s testimonies. We are very thankful that God has used these musical events to give people an opportunity to learn about Christ.

Friday Devotion: See Him With Your Heart

Recently, the staff and volunteers of Lutheran Hour Ministries in Lebanon distributed Bibles and food parcels to needy people in southern Lebanon. At one church, the pastor invited people to come forward. He said, "Come, Jesus is here, and He is ready to heal every wound, wipe every tear, and mend every broken heart."

A nine-year old boy named Ibrahim, a refugee from the 2006 war, asked, "Is He really here? Is Master Christ really here?

An LHM volunteer replied, "Yes, He is here, but we don't necessarily see Jesus with our eyes-we see Him with our heart."

Ibrahim asked if Jesus could be sitting next to him. The volunteer said, "Not only can He be right next to you, but even within your heart." Ibrahim said he wanted to know God and trust Him completely. By God's grace, Ibrahim acknowledged his sins and placed his trust in Jesus Christ as His Lord and Savior.

THE PRAYER: Dear Lord, grant us childlike faith so that we might trust Your love and feel Your presence all the time. Amen.

Biography of Author: Michel Matar is a guitarist in the Worship Band, a Christian music group performing since 1990 that has toured several countries with its Arabic, English, and French music. Jesus' love and forgiveness radically changed Matar's life in 1989. Since then, he has dedicated his life, his music, and his talents to serve the Lord. He and his wife Nuna-who sings and plays keyboards in the Worship Band-have five children.

BCC Graduates Receive Surprise Gifts

Last week LHM—Nicaragua held a graduation ceremony for people who had completed Bible Correspondense Courses in Pastal and surrounding communities. Graduates were pleasantly surprised when, in addition to the certificates, they received various items of clothing, courtesy of Orphan Grain Train. We thank God that these gifts were there to share with people in that community.

Friday Devotion:"Christ, My Companion"

Most people do not like being alone. Some people want to keep away from other people, groups, functions, or programs, but most people want to identify themselves with other people or groups.

The real situation that prevails among people is loneliness. Even though loneliness can become unbearable, it can also provide an experience of calmness and contentment for many.

Our Lord Jesus Christ often took time to be by Himself in silence and loneliness. According to John 7:53 and 8:1, everyone was leaving to go home, but Jesus went to the Mount of Olives. He spent His alone times with God.

New ideas and useful thoughts about life and the future come when we spend time with God. For example, many of our great leaders were raised in God-fearing families. We can also stress the fact that, without the companionship of God, we can do nothing and we are nothing.

In the beginning, God created man and woman. God felt it was not good for Adam to be alone so He created Eve to be a companion, partner, and helper. How many of us feel this way? Many young people shout, "Leave me alone!" as they struggle with tension and confusion about finding a true companion.

Many of us fail to realize we are not alone. God, our heavenly Father, gave His son Jesus Christ as our companion. He is with us always. Jesus is also named "Immanuel, which means God with us" (Matthew 1:23b). God sent His Son in the flesh, however, not merely to be our companion but to be our Savior. Without Christ's sacrifice, without His all-atoning work on the cross on our behalf, we would be lost forever -- friendless and doomed by our sins.

But God through His Son has made a better way -- an eternal way that begins in faith in Jesus' work and trusts He will never fail or forsake us. Our Lord also says, "I am with you always, to the end of the age" (Matthew 28:20b). Since Christ is with me, how can I say I am alone?

Dear friends, let us determine who should be our best companion today. The companion we decide upon must be sufficient for us in every aspect of life. Christ is the only one who can dispel our loneliness.

THE PRAYER: Heavenly Father, thank You for being our constant companion and for sending Your one and only Son to conquer our loneliness. Teach us to trust in You. Amen.

Friday Devotion: Power & Peace

During our recent trip to Thailand we would often find ourselves walking through the little souvenir shops that lined the streets or the open area around a popular Thai attraction. As we admired the workmanship of the beautiful Thai silks, carved wooden objects, colorful gem pendants, and polished stone figurines, we soon concluded many of the items in these shops were either in the shape of elephants or were decorated with pictures of elephants. Later, we learned from our tour guide that elephants were very important to Thai culture. Elephants in Thailand have long been a symbol of both power and peace. Several centuries ago, they were used by kings to lead armies to win wars and therefore restore peace among the people.

While looking through these same souvenir shops, we discovered most of these shops did not display anything with the shape of a cross. With only 1.6 percent of the population claiming to be Christian, this is not a surprising discovery. The cross, a symbol of power and peace for Christians around the world, reminds believers of God's sacrificial love. It was on a cross that God allowed His Son, Jesus Christ, to die for the sins of the world. The powerful death and resurrection of Jesus Christ gives victory, hope, and the promise of eternal peace to all believers.

A large cross is fastened to the front of the Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand building in Bangkok. During our first few days in the city, that cross became the image we sought. As we made our way through the unfamiliar streets of Bangkok congested with people, scented with unfamiliar smells, and displayed with unfamiliar words, the cross on this building brought us a powerful sense of security and peace. The cross identifies this building as a place where Christ is present -- both in the work being done and within the people who daily carry out His tasks. As Lutheran Hour Ministries reaches out to others through their countless ministries, we pray that 1.6 percent of the population (Christians) will be blessed and strengthened and 98.4 percent of the population (non-Christians) will hear the message of Christ, and no longer consider it foolishness, but as a means of hope.

Though our trip to Thailand quickly came to an end, it will long impact our hearts and lives. Like most tourists, we brought home a collection of souvenirs to remember our visit. This collection includes some beautiful silk scarves, tasty cashews, and even a few items with elephants on them. One item, though, will always be treasured as a rare find in Thailand: it is a hand-painted ceramic cross -- given to us by Lutheran Hour Ministries Thailand.

THE PRAYER:O God, we thank You for sending Your Son Jesus Christ to suffer and die on the cross so that we might know the power of the forgiveness of sins and the peace of eternal life. Open the doors of faith to non-believers so they might also enjoy the power and peace that can only come from You. In Christ's Name we pray. Amen.

India Youth Volunteer Group Holds Eye Clinic

The Salem District of Tamil Nadu, India is a very poor area whose residents are faced with a number of problems including joblessness, and a very high percentage of people affected by various diseases including HIV. For this reason, Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM)—India’s volunteer Youth Club found Salem to be an ideal place to share the love of Christ by caring for the elderly.

Much of the older population in the district suffers eye ailments like cataracts, but do not have the money or ability to travel to the eye clinic. So the LHM volunteers arranged for a free eye clinic with the support of local health authorities.

More than 200 people registered for the clinic in which medical checkups and treatment were given free of charge. Doctors were also on hand and, as a result, 15 people had their eyes operated on to remove their cataracts.

“Through this act of love, people who came to the clinic experienced the concern of Christians for their neighbors as we also shared the Good news of salvation through Jesus Christ along with the free treatment,” said LHM—India director, Rev. David.

Lutheran Hour Ministries—India staff have established youth clubs in several different areas over the past year. The clubs, known locally as Vaan Malar Youth Clubs, have been well received by church congregations in these communities because they engage young people and equip them to share the Word of God.

Bible School’s First Night!

Over the weekend, LHM—Mexico staff invited some students and teachers to be the first to make use of the first level of the newly-built Miriam and Mareli Day Care/Community and Learning Center in Tijuana, Mexico. The children participated in a Bible school held in a large mutli-purpose space.

Prior to the event staff member, Tere Montoya, met with the teaching staff to go over lesson plans and prepare activities and songs. They also brought in furniture and lots of educational toys, thanks to a donation from Concordia Lutheran Church in Chula Vista, CA who recently closed their west side preschool and opened a new preschool in East Chula Vista.

Nine teachers and 30 children who attended the first night, and more are expected throughout the week.

"Pray for the children that will learn about Jesus all week," said Melissa Salomon, director of LHM—Mexico. "pray the seed that is planted will grow and multiply fruit one hundred fold."

Global Impact Volunteers Give Resouces Time and Energy in Guatemala

A group of Global Impact volunteers from Faith Lutheran Church in Michigan visited LHM—Guatemala in July. Pastor Todd Biermann, senior pastor, led 13 members of his church as they performed service projects including painting at rural medical clinics, as well as the Holy Cross Lutheran missionary in Amatitlan, and the inside of the World's Redeemer Lutheran Church in Santiago Zamora.Vacation Bible Schools were also carried out in orphanages at REMAR and AGUA VIVA.

Kids Enjoy Summer Camp in Korea

Last week, LHM—South Korea hosted a summer camp for children at a small rural church in the province of Gosung Gang Won. The camp was held from July 29th through the 31st and drew participation from about 30 people, including teachers and children, who all came to enjoy a time of fellowship in the name of Christ.

There were three separate summer camps planned for the month of July but due to heavy rains and flooding, two of them were cancelled. One more camp is scheduled to begin this Thursday in Seoul. We ask that you join us in praying that everything goes well.

CNH Volunteers Prepare to Return to India

Two days from now the first team of volunteers will embark on a short-term mission trip to India. They will be continuing the work begun last year, in support of LHM ministry in India by helping to refurbish the 50 year-old Christian Media Centre (as LHM is known in that country). The trip was organized as part of the Global Impact Volunteer program and the group consists of volunteers from the California-Nevada-Hawaii District.

Over the past year, funds were raised, and a team selected and trained. Now we ask for your prayers that everything goes well on this trip.

India is a country of 1.2 billion people, yet fewer than 4% of them are Christian. The world’s largest democracy, and yet just earlier this year dozens of Christians were martyred, hundreds of churches burned, and thousands of homes destroyed in violence against their faith. 86% of the population lives on less than $2.50 a day. Yet, God is at work in India – today.

African Dance Group Entertains and Excites

Saturday morning at the Convention was an early start for some of us and I’m sure few expected to come away energized and wanting more, thanks to the rhythmic drumming of Djembe Fire.

The event began with a delicious, hot, breakfast buffet followed by an introduction of our visiting international directors from Cameroon, Chile, India and Russia – who shared a little more about language and culture in their home countries. Reverend David shared a Christian song from his native, India. This served as somewhat of a warm up to the featured entertainment.

From the first beat, the whole room was filled with the rhythms of West Africa. And it was not long before we realized that we would not be passive listeners that morning. The entertainers roamed the crowd, soliciting cheers and waves, and playing one side of the room against the other.

During the final song we all learned to sing a call-and-response harvest song. It was not traditional breakfast entertainment, but judging from the standing ovation, a good time was had by all.

This type of entertainment was intended to serve as an example of just some of the ways that Lutheran Hour Ministries shares the Gospel abroad through culturally appropriate song, dance and storytelling.

Spiritual Encouragement from Text Messaging

Lutheran Hour Ministries in Thailand uses regular cell phone text messages to encourage volunteers who have completed the Equipping the Saints (ETS) evangelism workshops. One such volunteer is Pitiporn Saenuwong, a young woman from the Yasothorn Province of Thailand.

LHM—Thailand has been sending Gospel messages to her, via her cell phone, since she attended an ETS workshop held at her church in March. The LHM—Thailand team recently had the opportunity to reconnect with Pitiporn when they visited another church in the area.

She thanked them for the messages saying, “the Gospel text messages that you send me are very encouraging when I feel despondent or when I feel like giving up.” She believes that the Gospel text messaging is very crucial for ETS graduates who may easily become discouraged - especially in a country like Thailand where Christians are a small minority.

The workshops are designed to help volunteers spread the message of hope in a way that lay people can personally use in their conversations with neighbors and family.

Government Official in Nigeria Endorses BCC

During a graduation ceremony of 55 high school students at Community Secondary School in Uyo, Nigera, a top representative of the state’s Ministry of Education commended Lutheran Hour Ministries—Nigeria for offering free Bible Correspondence Courses to all for well over 25 years now. Nelson Mkpat, the government official noted that the government had a lot to learn from the tenacity and consistency with which LHM—Nigeria has anchored the program, adding that the BCCs are a perfect complement to the standard school curriculum, to help in moral edification of students. With this endorsement from the government for the BCC program, LHM staff are encouraged to get more schools to recognize and use the themed Bible courses. To God be the glory.

Limalama Love

The Limalama (a form of martial arts) program is yielding positive results. This LHM—Mexico sponsored outreach, through Project JOEL, to youth in marginal communities in Tijuana connected with local a Lutheran congregation. Interesting fact: Since the youth have received their uniforms (and walk from their homes to the church where the classes are held) the class size has increased by almost 100%. The children without uniforms are the new children who joined within the last few weeks.

Puppet performances by LHM—Cambodia at the villages of Veal Thnang, Beoung Basac, and Chroy, in Cambodia, attracted over 400 people recently. Puppet performance ministry is a very popular and effective medium to bring the message of hope of the Lord to the largely rural population of Cambodia. Bible stories acted out by puppet impact every class and age of people, and helps attract the people to the Church.

In May, LHM—Thailand had a ministry booth at the 7th Annual Thailand Congress on Evangelism at the Rangsit Center, at Thammasat University in Bangkok. Over 4,000 people attended the event. It provided LHM staff members with an opportunity to reconnect with some Christian friends who have participated in other LHM programs including Equipping the Saints evangelism workshops, listener gatherings and other ministry events. More than 200 attendees signed up to receive Gospel messages through text messaging, and some asked for help in organizing evangelistic activities in their communities. LHM—Thailand’s Director, Monta “Boom” Ekwanit-Denow, also attended several workshops where she received helpful ideas that her staff can use for the ministry in the future.

Welcome Nilo!

We have a new addition to the staff. As of Monday, Nilo Figur has taken on the position of Area Counselor for Latin America and the Caribbean. Nilo, originally from Brazil, most recently served as a professor of communications at Concordia University in Austin, Texas, and has been a great friend of the ministry for over 20 years.

Nilo was a pastor in Brazil and served in several leadership positions in the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Brazil (IELB) including Secretary and Vice President of Communications. He has extensive experience in communication, as well as training as a pastor, and a journalist. He holds a degree in communications from Webster University and is finishing his doctorate in communications at the University of Texas at Austin.

With the arrival of Nilo, we bid a fond farewell to Ken Peterson who retired from that position. Ken served the Lord through LHM for over 25 years: first as an office director in Venezuela; then as International director and, later, Ministries director (combining the U.S. and international departments); before moving to Panama in 1995 as the Area Counselor.

I can confirm that Djembe Fire will be performing a fusion African music and dance.

Djembe Fire consists of six to eight drummers and dancers from across Africa, who tell stories through rhythmic drumming and singing.

Forgiveness Triumphs Over Hatred and Pain

LHM-Lebanon: ETS in Syria

LHM—Lebanon organized an Equipping the Saints (ETS) workshop from May 8-9, 2009 in the Homs district of Syria, near the northern Lebanese border. Thirty two people attended the program. All of them are already Bible Correspondence Course graduates, as well as committed church members who volunteer to distribute Gospel materials.

One of the Bible course students who participated in the ETS conference was Samar, a lady who keeps contact with LHM staff through phone calls and letters. We continued to encourage her and strengthen her faith as she coped with difficulties in her life.

Samar was living a hard life with her parents. Her father physically abused both her, and her rich and very educated mother. He would keep asking for money to go gambling. And when Samar’s mother refused to give him money, he would shout at them, as he beat and hurt them. Because during that time (20 years ago) there wasn’t any law to protect women from such kind of abuse in Lebanon, her father kept his cruelty raging on until he wasted their fortune.

After all that misery, they ran away to Syria, where Samar’s mother had a nervous breakdown. She went to a mental hospital where she got the care she needed. With a lot of prayers she eventually got much better.

All the sorrows that Samar faced have left deep wounds in her heart and this was reflected in her letters to us. We kept in contact with her, praying for her, advising her, and teaching her about God’s love that we get in Jesus. Samar was brought to faith by the power of God's Spirit, and became involved in a church where they took care of her.

Finally after years of correspondence, we invited Samar to the ETS conference. She gladly accepted and warmly welcomed us. After participating in the program which is about evangelism and the urgency to witness, she expressed her desire to serve her Lord in every opportunity. She will use her personal testimony as she explains to others that forgiveness is an essential part of healing. She will distribute the same LHM booklet on the topic of forgiveness which helped her overcome the hatred she had for her father.

Cast Off, But Not Forgotten

LHM—Ethiopia celebrated Easter, this year, with over 160 patients at the Gerfesa Rehabilitation center for the mentally challenged. The staff sang songs, and told the Easter story - message of hope to the patients. Many of whom have been cast aside by society.

“Although they felt helpless, we went there on Christ's behalf to show them that they are important to Jesus and they are not forgotten by Him,” said one staff member.

Prayers for Paco

Paco is a member of San Pablo Lutheran Church and has worked with Project JOEL and Legna since its beginning work in San Pablo. He is a leader at 17 years old serving in the music ministry and in all the activities sponsored by Project JOEL and San Pablo Lutheran Church. He is in the hospital undergoing tests and dialysis. In this photo Paco, one day before going to the hospital, was fixing up the fence in the JOEL sports field.

He is a mature youth not only disposed to serve but find way to serve without being asked. He is a reserved youth but shows with his actions that he is motivated by Christ and a willingness to share with others what he know has in his life. Please pray for him.

Professor Develops National Educational Curriculum Using JOEL Materials

Recently, MEDUCA (Ministry of Education of Panama) introduced its Work Plan for the 2009 Curriculum, particularly in the "Integral Prevention and Education in Values” area. Professor Dayra Ruiz, a JOEL team member and volunteer for LHM—Panama, was selected by MEDUCA to develop the themes of values for the primary section, especially the fifth and sixth grade. For the "glory of God" the program presented by Professor Dayra was approved and officially it will be developed in schools across the country. This program contains part of the curriculum of Project JOEL and is supported by LHM materials.

We can officially say that Panama has a program based on Christian principles and values, which had not been given previously in Panama. I am sure that only God created the conditions to make it in this way.

Michigan Team Visits Nicaragua

In March, LHM—Nicaragua received a visit from a Global Work & Witness team from Martin Luther Chapel, Michigan. The volunteers participated in the construction of a small structure where children in a rural area are learning Bible courses. People from the community of “El Pastal” expressed their gratitude for the young volunteers who took the time to help them.

But it was not all work for the visitors. They visited different high schools and elementary schools where they shared the Message of Christ during presentations to students. Some of them also made time to play soccer with students.

The "Prodigal Son": Puppet Edition

Approximately 570 people showed up to a puppet performance of “The Prodigal Son” at Phuc Am church in Vietnam. The show was put on by LHM staff with the help of members from the congregation. Leading up to the event, these church members went door-to-door to invite their friends, relatives, neighbors. And afterwards, 26 people in the audience expressed a desire to know more about Christ. The members of the congregation were joyful, saying that they had not had an evangelistic event of this kind in their area for a long time.

They clear out the pews in the little church of San Pablo Lutheran Church and Legna, the Project JOEL Director at LHM—Mexico, and her team of instructors lead the class of children. They talk to the children about what it means to have a healthy physical life, emotional life and spiritual life. Legna talks with such love about how amazing it is to get to spend time and know about the lives, the struggles, the hurts, the joys of these children and young people. The impact is BIG when you do things with a love for Jesus and a love for people.

A Day Out for the Blind

On February 28 LHM—India, working in cooperation with The Prayer Fellowship of the Blind, held a gathering for a number of blind people living in the south Chennai area. People from all age groups, most of them non-Christians, and many blind from birth, gathered under a banyan tree at a church campus.

“The lives of these people are really hard, it’s unbelievable,” commented Rev. C. David, director of LHM—India. “Being an unprivileged and suffering section of the society they need some help for their livelihood.”

Each of the 80 blind people who attended the event received a little over 2 pounds of plastic wire (many of them earn a living weaving plastic garden chairs), as well a cassette tape of Gospel materials. Everyone enjoyed a full day of sharing songs, messages and testimonies.

Missouri Team Witnesses in Guatemala

LHM—Guatemala hosted a Global Work & Witness team from the Group Missionary of Campus Lutheran Church of Columbia, in Columbia, Missouri. The group of volunteers spent time leading two Vacation Bible Schools in Los Limones and Piedras Azules – new mission fields of the Resurrection Lutheran Church at Gualán. Approximately 325 children attended.

Young people from the Church in Gualán also worked side by side with volunteer team on a construction project which consisted of the renovating the ceiling of the Church. This was a great experience for all involved.

United in Song

The popularity of singing competitions has apparently made its way across the world to Myanmar. LHM—Myanmar (known locally as Word of Hope) held a Valentine’s Day singing competition in Yangon that attracted almost 450 young people to participate. This was the first outreach program that LHM—Myanmar specifically targeted to youth.

The organizers of the competition reached out to youth from many different church denominations, as well as other religions. But the focus of the contest was the Gospel message and how young people could live fulfilled, Christ-centered lives.

Participants were judged based on their performance of three Christian songs. The winners received 100,000 Kyat (the equivalent of US$50). There were cash prizes for second and third place winners also.

“We gave cash prizes because all the other secular songs competitions attract youth with high cash amounts. Our cash prize is still significantly less than the secular world but it got the youth interested,” said one of the LHM—Myanmar staff.

JOEL Goes to Jamaica

For nearly 13 years, Lutheran Hour Ministries (LHM) in Latin America has been successfully reaching out to youth with the Gospel message through Project JOEL (translated as Youth with Free Spirits). Now, after ten months of planning, that youth outreach ministry has come to Jamaica.

Lutheran Hour Ministries—Jamaica recently completed the first Project JOEL training seminars at Mona High School in Kingston. The event was attended by 33 students (half of whom are not Christian) and by the end 13 students volunteered to serve as volunteers in the school and community.

Having these student volunteers is especially crucial in this early stage of implementing Project JOEL in because they will be trained to lead future seminars and engage their peers.

“We trust God for what He alone shall accomplish in the lives of these young people participating in the project,” said Ite. “Pray for God to bless these youth as they faithfully attend the seminar sessions.”

Project JOEL began in 1996 as an outreach program to provide Christian guidance to youth in Panama and help them make healthy choices in their lives. Since then, the program has enjoyed growth and success in Latin America and is being integrated into the outreach efforts of LHM ministry centers in other parts of the world.

About 400 people showed up in Hong Ngu, Vietnam, to a screening of the Pet-Napping video by Lutheran Hour Ministries—Vietnam. The show was put on at the end of January as part of the celebration of Tet, the Vietnamese New Year based on the Lunar calendar.

Tet is shortened from Tet Nguyen Dan or Feast of the First Morning and is the most important holiday on the Vietnamese calendar. It takes place from the first day of the first month of the Lunar calendar (around late January or early February) with celebrations lasting until at least the third day. This is the same time that the Chinese New Year is also celebrated.

The children, who made up a majority of the audience, enjoyed the animated cartoon which teaches them to love and treat their friends and classmates just as God loves and treats us all. Pet-Napping and other videos in the Puzzle Club series have been translated into a number of different languages including Arabic, Japanese, Russian, Spanish and Vietnamese.

Care Packages Arrive in Nicaragua in Time for Christmas

Each year, Lutheran Hour Ministries—Nicaragua prepares numerous Christmas outreach events. Last year’s events were made extra special by the arrival of Global Care Packages distributed throughout the month of December. Volunteers combined the care package distribution with puppet shows, clown performances and drama conveying the true meaning of the Christmas, beginning with how Jesus lived and suffered as a human being, until His resurrection and ascension to the heaven. LHM—Nicaragua staff and volunteers also shared toys and “piñatas” with congregations that are working close with LHM in places like Granada, Matagalpa, El Viejo and Rancheria among others.

Korea Exhibit Attracts 300 Visitors

Last Christmas, Lutheran Hour Ministries in South Korea held an art exhibition showcasing the works of painter Jae Im Kim and her brother, sculptor, Kim Jae Hun. Over the course of the week, 300 people visited the exhibit and over 50 pieces of art were sold. Jae Im Kim, a long-time supporter of LHM—Korea, donated some of the profits for ministry.

LHM—India Completes Christmas Distribution

LHM—India celebrated the birth of Christ with residents of some poor villages and also with some evangelists living and working around Chennai city.

On December 18th they distributed candy, gift bags and new clothing to 50 villagers, both young and old. The money to purchase the gifts was donated by one of the Ministry’s supporters specifically for this purpose.

LHM—India staff and volunteers also distributed new clothing and a small financial gift to 15 evangelists and their families. This gift was specially given by members of the Madras Korean Church for the above purpose through our Ministry.

Each year, LHM—India broadcasts a telecast on Christmas day. This past Christmas, in addition to the regular broadcast channel, two more channels came forward and each donated a half-hour programming time for the telecast. LHM—India has received appreciation for the program and messages.

Nuru Media Director Attacked

Two weeks ago after having started moving my family I went back to my house to collect other things and I was immediately faced with a problem. My own neighbours (who are predominantly Kikuyu) confronted me and said that they are not allowing men to move out since they would be attacked by the Luos on the other side. They made it clear that they were not giving us any option and could do anything if we attempted to move out.

There was a lot of fear that the neighbourhood would be attacked and therefore I called my wife and told here I had to spend the night in our old place.

That night the Luos truly attacked, and they overwhelmed the local security. There was burning of houses, looting and many people were attacked with machetes and other crude weapons.
They broke down my gate using crowbars. I chose to stand in a narrow corridor since I could not be attacked by more than one person at a time. That decision probably saved my life. I only had a hockey stick with me but I was able to hold them off. I was hit with a crowbar which has sharpened edges on my left side below the collarbone.

The area has remained the most volatile in the city but I am now on the other side. I am now able to go the office.

The Grass is Hurting

Life has taken a dramatic twist in Kenya after the announcement of the presidential results which were hotly contested. Each side of the divide is claiming victory which leaves the citizen deeply polarized and ethnically divided.

As the African saying goes, “when two elephants fight it is the grass that gets hurt” this saying is true now to the residents of Kibera. We had the privilege of visiting the displaced citizen in Kibera slums where thousands of people are homeless; they have pitched camp in the Nairobi international show ground. Lillian is a young girl aged two and half years is a victim whose parents have been displaced and are spending chilling nights in a make shift camp.

The problem began when they were told to vacate their home since they belong to a different ethnic group that lives in the area. Their house was torched and her family could not salvage anything. Lillian’s family represents a bigger population of more than 500,000 thousand of Kenyans who have been displaced as a result of this post election violence.

The Nuru Media Ministry staff has taken the forefront in trying to help most of the displaced people at the Jamhuri show ground. We are kindly asking for your prayers and donations to try and help the human crisis we are facing. Help us give hope to the hopelessness victim.

Lutheran Church Torched

Hell has broken loose in Kibera slum the biggest ghetto in sub-Saharan Africa. Kibera is estimated to have over 1.2 millon people who live in shanties. Most of its residents earn less than 2 dollars a day making life very difficult.

It is unfortunate that Kibera has experienced the worst violence after the election, because of its multiethnic population the tension and fighting is very high with the opponents torching and destroying houses and properties.

Our affiliate church known as Springs of Life Lutheran Church in Kibera was not spared either. A group of arsonists burned down the church and other facilities within its compound.

The arsonists and thugs first looted church equipments and later burned down the medical center that had been set up recently and a nursery school that were within the same compound. This unfolding of events has baffled many because church as a sacred as it is has been desecrated. Pray with us for peace and calm to return to our beloved country.

Pray: My Country is in Flames

Kenya is in the midst of violent turmoil and upheaval following the recent presidential elections. The violence erupted when it was announced that the incumbent president, Mwai Kibaki, a member of the Kikuyu tribe (the largest ethnic group in Kenya), had narrowly defeated challenger Raila Odinga of the Luo tribe in the Dec. 27 polls. Supporters of Odinga claimed widespread voter rigging by the electoral commission in favor of Kibaki and, as a result, have aimed their anger and frustration at the members of Kibaki's Kikuyu tribe.

John Maina is the Director for Lutheran Hour Ministries in Kenya and related his first-hand experiences via e-mail.

"Our country is slowly grinding to a standstill. Within a week, a nation that was so hopeful as it went to the polls after the most open and democratic campaign period this country had ever seen, is now covered with a cloud of despair. It is surprising how quickly a country can collapse.

My eyes have seen sights in the last week that I had only read about in other countries or watched on CNN. I have watched a mob hack someone to death 10 meters from where I was standing. Three days ago, 10 bodies were collected on the street where I live - victimized for belonging to the "wrong" tribe.

Church services that were scheduled for New Year's weekend were cancelled. I had been asked to lead the service at the main Lutheran Church downtown on New Year's Day, but instead we were frantically calling everybody we knew telling them not to even attempt to step into town.

Criminal gangs from both sides (of the conflict) are taking over the city posing as demonstrators, looting and burning. I have spent almost the whole week holed up in my house and was only able to come out yesterday [Jan. 3]. Two sections of my residential area are populated by people from the tribe of the opposition leader and they are attacking, indiscriminately, anybody perceived to not have voted for their leader. Gang rapes have been reported in the rift valley and even in the city.

The most frightening thing is the lack of food in some sections of the city, since mobs have broken into shopping centers and there is nothing left to buy. The desperation is now causing mobs to break into peoples' homes.

I would like to ask for prayers for the members of our staff. Most of the staff lives close to, and in, the Kawangware and Kibera areas that have seen the worst outbreaks of violence in the city. Yesterday the Lutheran Church in Kibera, along with the school, was burned down.

The city is not even the worst hit area. The rift valley's beautiful town of Eldoret, where we were planning an outreach event for February, has more than 700 people in the hospital with machete wounds and 84 bodies in the mortuary. This is the town where women and children who had sought refuge in a church were burnt to death.

If the tension is not broken within the week it will be extremely difficult to salvage the situation. I am afraid it could turn into a civil war, particularly if the big Kikuyu tribe starts to revenge the killing of their people in other regions. This is something that has not happened in the 40 years of Kenya's independence.

The opposition is encouraging demonstrations with the intent of putting pressure on the government and there is a plan to march to State House (the Presidential home). In response, the state has cancelled meetings, explaining that the protestors cannot be controlled because every time the mobs assemble for a demonstration they also burn and loot.

The two leaders, both the incumbent President and Raila Odinga, are not showing any signs of reaching out to each other. Archbishop Desmond Tutu is in the country to mediate and we are hoping for a breakthrough. Please pray for that.

I have managed to move my family outside the city and I am in a place close to the LHM office. But I cannot go into the office since its location is a center of mayhem. Please pray for our caretaker who lives in the building, which is very near where three gas stations have been burnt down.

We were planning to re-open the office (after being closed for the holidays) on Jan. 4, but I have changed that to the 8th, if the situation allows. There is very little available public transportation and people are being pulled out of vehicles and beaten if they are identified as being from the "wrong" tribe.

At this point I have advised the Global Work & Witness team that was scheduled to come to Kenya next week to definitely postpone their visit until further notice. We cannot guarantee their safety at this time."
